2012: The Year of the MOOC?

As I’ve been busy wrapping gifts, trimming trees and tying up all of the loose ends of 2012, I’ve also been reflecting on the most outstanding trends this year in the space of higher education.  The jury is still out, but I couldn’t help but get excited when I noticed that Inside Higher Ed deemed 2012: The Year of the MOOC.

I’ve written about UC Irvine’s support of MOOCs and its partnership with Coursera several times now. 

In a recent piece, “Top Ed-Tech Trends of 2012: MOOCs,” Audrey Watters chronicles, by month, the steps made to bring MOOCs into the mainstream (including, I’d like to highlight, when UC Irvine officially joined Coursera, in Sept.).  The rate at which top universities all over the country, and now abroad, have adopted the concept of Massive Open Online Courses is astounding.
